Something we have all taken for granted the past six weeks was the weather. Thus far on our trip we have had amazing weather…very little rain, lots of sunshine. We had to work in a little drizzle a few times and we had to deal with some wet vegetation but that was the worst of it. So the weather in Darkwoods was a bit of a change for us. Heating up the Hot Springs
Kootenay National Park is a long, thin park with the highway running down the middle through a large valley and with mountains rising up on either side. The valley is made up of coniferous forest and it is very susceptible to forest fires. Following the highway up through the park, you pass through an old, forested area and then suddenly you pass into a huge burnt area full of dead trees from the highway right up to the treeline on the mountains on both sides. Bark Beetles and Wildfires
Hello again! After taking down all our traps in Burnt Cabin Bog Ecological Reserve, we packed up and drove for two days up to Kluane National Park and Reserve. While the drive was long there was plenty of scenery to see along the way. While driving North on the Stewart-Cassiar highway, we passed through a region of forest where two wildfires had recently occurred, in 2010 and 2011. Continue reading “Bark Beetles and Wildfires”
