#Biodiversity150 number 91 of 150 Bristle Millipede

91/150: Don’t impede this millipede!

Animalia: Arthropoda: Diplopoda: Polyxenida: Polyxenidae: Polyxenus: Polyxenus lagurus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Bristle millipedes live in dark and damp habitats like logs and soil that other millipedes also call home. Unlike other millipedes, bristle millipedes grow spikes like a porcupine because they lack the chemical defenses possessed by most millipedes. These defensive bristles grow all over the body but are especially clustered at the rear to protect the head while the millipede defends itself. The bristles are barbed and detach from the millipede easily, resulting in the assailant, usually an ant or another small arthropod, covered with the bristles stuck in their own hairs. Although these millipedes lose bristles when defending themselves, they will grow back when the millipede molts. Interestingly, losing bristles hastens the occurrence of their next molt. Their life history and distribution are not well studied but these little millipedes are found in parts of Europe and North America. #Canada150 #Biodiversity150
