Bison Crossing and Caterpillar Buffet
We’re spending this week in Elk Island National Park, which is home to both Plains Bison and Wood Bison. When we arrived at the park, we saw a few lone bison along the road, but today on our way to visit our first site we saw a whole herd.

Insect Developments
Today while collecting along the Consolation Lake Trail at Moraine Lake we came upon some very interesting looking insect. Most people’s first thought when looking at the pictured insect wouldn’t be “Beetle”, but it is indeed the larval stage of a predacious ground beetle.

Moraine Lake
Today we travelled to Moraine Lake in Banff National Park. The turquoise lake surrounded by snow capped mountains has been my favourite place we’ve visited so far, and we took some time to take in the inspiring view.

Midnight Cricket Hunt
This week we’re collecting insects in Jasper National Park, which is a definite change of scenery from Prince Albert. We’ve been fortunate enough to get to travel through the Rockies, and the trails we collect on have offered very scenic views of the surrounding mountains.

Agata Lied… But the View is Nice
While I’m hoping biting flies won’t become the topic of every blog update, I do feel it’s necessary to mention mosquitoes once again based on the sheer density we’ve encountered here at Jasper National Park.

Canada Day at Elk Island National Park
Today we celebrated Canada’s 145th anniversary at Elk Island National Park. After a welcoming speech by the park superintendent Stephen Flemming, a newly emigrated young Canadian raised the flag to the chorus of the anthem.

The Point
Today was a beautiful sunny day in Elk Island National Park, and the BIObus crew was busy pinning the contents of a bucket trap. There are only two micro-pinning trays, so I was able to take a break and sit in the sun on the dock of Lake Astotin.

Birthday on the Bus
Yesterday was my birthday and to celebrate, on Monday, the girls and I went for a morning horse ride through grassland areas with Mountain Meadow Trail Rides just outside of Waterton Lakes National Park.

Rainy Day
The Rocky Mountains are a beautiful sight to behold with many interesting flora and fauna associated, however along with the interesting terrain comes unpredictable and often unpleasant weather. Evidently, this makes insect collecting difficult for the crew; so today during one of these rainy spells we sorted insects in the safety of the BIObus.
